"ANNETTE'S VISIT TO GNOMELAND"
Annette was spoilt That was the truth about it. When it was bath time, she. /: kicked, screamed, and splashed, and called out naughty things,to her nurse; but her mother calmly said that she was a bad girl.
Now, Annette was very fond of chalking other people's clean doorsteps, and laughing when they came out,-to find their doorsteps scribbled all oved with coloured chalks. One hot day,. as she sat reading a little gnome popped out of the book and asked, "Would you like to go to Gnomelarid? If so, jump on my back."
"Yes," said Annette quickly, forgetting in ■her excitement to say please, and she ..jumped out of her hammock on ?t6. his back, only to find that she was the same size as Crackers. (She was told his name by the Gnome Queen, later in the day).
As soon as they arrived there, Crackers ; said to the Queen, "Here is the new step cleaner your Majesty."
"Set her to work at once!" said the Gnome .Queen sternly, and Annette was told to clean so many steps that she couldn't see where the. top was. As soon as she cleaned one step, however,' the naughty gnomes danced on it and made it dirty again, until she was nearly crying. At last she said to trie Queen, who was standing watching her, "I can't do them all!"
"Well, you must drink this to make you- good!", said the Queen, almost as sternly, as before, thought Annette miserably; but she drank it, and it tasted lovely. s
Suddenly she'found herself in her hammock again. She jumped out of it and. ran Inside to tell her mother, who ;said it was, just a dream, but Annette was not so sure, and anyway, anyone could prove that it: had really happened, because Annette was never naughty again, as far as I know. .
