WELLINGTON LEAGUE

The thirteenth annual, meeting of the Wellington Chess League was held in the rooms of the Wellington Chess Club recently. Mr. F. J. Brooker presided ovei a good attendance and the following dele" gates were present: Messrs. J. I. Goldsmith, W. White, F..McCrone (Brooklyn); A. T. Craven, F. K. Kelling, J: L. Hardy (Wellington);. J." K. Webling, &. M. Hollings, W. K. Mathieson (Shell); G. W. Wood (Miramai"); J. A. Glasgow, E. E. Hicks (Ngaio); D.-.Stephens, H. M Kosenberg (Working Men's Club); R. A Godtschalk (Wadestown); R. Gilkinsoa (Hutt Valley); W. Berry (Wellington South); W. Kemble Welch (Karori), - McWilliams (Technical); and H. N. Eobie (honorary secretary). .The annual report stated that there wus no increase in membership during the year The number of affiliated clubs still' remained at twelve. On the other hand there was an increase in the number of teame competing in the league's competitions, wtih the result that a C grade had been instituted, and it was also considered necessary to split the B grade competition into two sections. The successful team* in the three grades were Working Men's Club, Wadestown, and" Wellington. , Tfie honours were keenly fought- for and inter est in the contests sustained to the fin- ' ish. In the champion of: champions'tour-, nament Mr. A. W. Gyles, recorded bis ninth win during the past ten years, a wonderful achievement. \ . The report and'balaucesheet were adopted unanimously. The election of officars: resulted as follows:—Patron; the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop; president, Mr. F. K. KeHinc; vice-presidents, Mr. A. T. Craven (as senior vice-president of the Wellington Club), and the presidents of the twelve affiliated clubis; chairman, Mr. V. ,i. Brooker; honorary treasurer. Mr! J. A. Glasgow; honorary . auditor, Mr. A. VV Gyles; honorary solicitor, Mr. R. Gilkison; honorary.secretary.and reporter, Mr' 11. N. Robie; permit committee, Messrs Brooker and Craven; management comm-t----tee, Messrs. E. Gilkison, F. McCrone, X A. Godtschalk, W. Kemble Welch, J. !.. Hardy, with officers ex officjo. A motion to increase the subscription to 10s, moved by Mr. J. I. Goldsmith, was narrowly defeated. As the object of the motion was primarily to. counteract the yearly loss on the North versus South match, it is more than probable that thisfunction will be placed on a self-support-ing basis next season.
