ACTUAL TRANSFER

BARON ALOISFS WISH

GOOD OMEN FOR PEACE

(British Official Wireless.) (Received March 2, 11.30 ajn.),

RUGBY, March 1

The ceremony of the return of th« Saar Territory to Germany took place this morning. The actual transfer was made by members of the League Committee of Three, Baron Aloisi and Messieurs Lopez and Cantilo, to. Dr. Frick in the Government building at Saarbrucken, outside which assembled an enormous crowd which cheered loudly when the German flags fluttered to. the mast-head on the building.

Inside Baron Aloisi delivered a brie* speech in which he said:—

"In the name of the League of Nations and in my capacity as President of the Commission of Three which has regulated all questions connected with the Saar, I have the honour today to I complete the actual transfer of. the [Saar territory to the Reich. This closes a page in history and with it disappears an element of unrest in the relations among peoples. I express the wish that the solution of this problem, reached after long and difficult negotiations, : carried on in the spirit of loyalty and mutual understanding, may prove a good omen for the quiet and peace of Europe." , ■

The chairman of the Saar Governing Commission, Mr. Geoffrey Knox, had handed .over to the Committee of Three yesterday after which' he left the Saar, where he had fulfilled for three years an extremely difficult task.

The British newspapers today pay tributes to the tact and courage which, he displayed, despite the unfortunate campaigns of vilification to which he was at times subjected. ': ; :

The conferment of a knighthood upon him was announced last night.
