CANBERRA HELD UP
TROUBLE OVER FIREMAN

SYDNEY/ This Day. ' Tho Howard Smith steamer Canberra, with 370 passengers aboard for Queensland ports, was pi'ovente'd from sailing last night. Ono fireman was the causo i of the trouble, the Seamen's Union demanding that'he :-liould bo'engaged by the company to fill a vacancy among the crew. The vqssel was due to sail at 8 p.m., but later at night tho company'was compelled to adyiso passengers that the ship would not leavo that night. Tho trouble arose originally in Brisbane a few weeks ago, when the company declined to engage a certain man. Tho Canberra on that occasion was delayed nineteen hours. Apparently, knowing that the vacancy would have to bo filled in Sydney, tho man who1 was refused employment in Brisbane travelled to Sydney. ■ Tho Seamen's Union decided that ho should bo the only man offered for the vacancy. The company's officials refused to engage tho man.
