ACCUSED CROSS-EXAMINED

DAMAGING ADMISSIONS

At a point where, , the, prosecutor accused tho defendant of lying, Hauptmann leapt up and cried, ",You lie'd to me too, in this court. You stop that. I f&el innocent. I am innocont,"

Hauptmunn, under • cross-examina-tion, was compelled to make several damaging admissions. He would not flatly stato that' Fisch had -written the ransom notes- or committed rtho kidnapping, although tho prosecutor gavo him an opportunity to .do so. Ho ad* mittod mis-spelling certain words in his own notebooks and 'similarly misspelling ,in . the-» ransom notes. He denied statements ha had made to the police when first arrested, and denied with evident anger an allegation that he had told a friend he wished to get rid of his wife. Ho explained that ho had hidden 1400. dollars from his wife, but was unable to explain why he had difficulty at tho tame time in meeting a 74-do'llar bill,; due to a , brokerage house with which he waa trading.
