RACING AT ELLERSLIE

KING MUSK AND KILTOWYN

(By Telegraph.) (Special from "Early Bird.")

AUCKLAND, ■ This Day

The Takapuna -Jockey; Club's Summor Meeting concluded today in fine weather. The attendance was good and the track very hard and fast.. The totalisator handled £30,326, compared with £25,025 on tho corresponding clay last year, an nieiease of £5301. The totirt for the meeting was £53,329 10s against £45,911 10s last year, an increase of £7418. J/ot in worked out very well in the Moana Maiden Handicap, Mazir beating Alignment in a close finish, while the five bestbacked horses were well clear of the remaindci at the post. Mazir and Lady Diana led to the home turn from High Tea, Abtarth, and Alignment, and over the final furlong Mazir was clear when Alignment put in a strong claim, but he just tailed to catch tlie topweight. Lady Diana held on for a moderate third, and ny.ht up were Astarth and High Tea, well clear of Nieodemtis, and . Chief Emerald. Ihe winner is more than useful and should' soon win again.

The highweight event-provided- another suipiihe, Valpai winning . at''double .'figuies, with the favourite, The Khedive, beateu into fourth place. Sir Willonyx was pulling hard in front for six furlongs, but Air Lassie then ran past him and she was clear of Valpai, King Tut, and Courthaven at the home turn. Valpai finished stiongly to beat Air Lassie in another tight finish, while King Tut held on for thud, just ahead of The Khedive, Sir Willonyx, and Courthaven. The first two horses outclassed the others, while sore-^ neah did not help tlie favourite.

A splendid .' finish was staged by Lord Willonyx and Adalene in the Suburban Hack Handicap, the former winning by

half a head. A good start saw Adalene ■ and Miss Lorraine begin best, but crossing the top Guy Egypt and then Lord Willonyx ran up fast, while Firebi-ick- wus going through on the rails.. Lord Willptiyx . headed Gay Egypt, Adalene, Firebrick, and Miss Lorraine at the bend for home. Lprd Willoliyx slrook oif the early challengers and'then Adalene headed hiitt, but the other-came again and just got' his nose in front on the post. Miss Lu and MissLjorraine, both finishing on, were only bnif a length awuy, and 'Firebrick-followed, well clear-of My Money and .Tutor. Prior to the start Tray Bit threw his rider, A. Tinker, and the horse was withdrawn. Lord Willonyx paid a rather astonishing double-figure", price, for his Thames lorin was good. _ ~' THE WIN BY KILTOWYN. . 'Kiltowyn nguin proved himself a good I' horse by the style in which he won the Jockey Club Handicap, for which he was favourite. The. race was one of tactics. Monanui was squeezed out at the start' and Sinking Fund took: charge going out; of the straight from Kiltowyn and Prince Colossus. The leader slowed the field up,but at the end of half a mile Voitre rushed Caliente into the lead and she livened up the pace from Sinking Fund , and Kiltowyn, with Prince Colossus dippJ ping back. 'Prolyxo moved up crossing'the top and Caliente led into the home stretch .from Sinking Fund; Prolyxo,. Kiltowyn, and Monanui. It was. a hard struggle up tlie last furlong, Caliente hanging on, while Kiltowyn and Monanui were challenging. Kiltowyn came round' the; horses in front of him: and he" caughtCaliente near the post and beat her .by- ' half a length, scoring a very impressive i win under his solid weight. Monanui ran ' well into third place, ahead of Sinking Fund and Prolyxo, with Prince Colossus (who cracked up badly) tailed off. Kiltowyn is now at the top of his form and his next appearance in the Cup at i Te Ai'oha will be awaited with interest. < Caliente might have made: it even harder for the winner had riot . circumstances i caused her to be rushed to the. front so

■ soon. Monanui ran a good race after getting away so badly. FIRST PLACE TO PARQUET. There was big money for Parquet in tile Hobson Handicap, and the favourite duly materialised, although only after a hard race with the -topweight. Flood Tide stumbled at the start and Mungakowhia lost ground, Application going out clear. Armncourt joined Application at the half-mile and the pair turned into the straight in front of Parquet, Velocipede, and Flood Tide. The leaders were quickly disposed of and Parquet hit the front at the furlong post, and then Velocipede and Flood Tide challenged, a. line race' ending in favour of Parquet over Velocipede and Flood Tide, tile trio finishing at threetfuarter length, intervals, with1 Armacourt and Application not' far away. The winner. |has\a good record of. a win, • a second, and a third in her three starts to date. Velocipede went a good race after starting wide out, but Flood Tide might even have won had he not almost fallen when the barTier went up. . WELL-EARNED VICTORY. At last King Musk won, a valuable hack race when he led the field home in the* Hauraki Plate, the success being well overdue. Scotland was the early leader, but crossing, the top the half-dozen run-) ners were racing in pairs, Crooning and. Lion Heart being the leaders, from King.! Husk and Scotland. • The leading pair Mere done with at the distance, where! King Musk was left in charge, and although challenged by Scotland and On' Parade he' held on well ■•■to- win, while On Parade was doing, best of the whole ifieldat; the; post.' The'others were beaten off,:.King Rey beiny fourth, '■ King Musk' is the makings of a fair handioap performer;' for he caiietay. Another splendid finish marked the Devonport Handicap, the favourite, Coronis. just beating her younger Bister. Sironal- The favourite soon got to the front, whereas King's Archer and British Columbia were slow, away, but at the halfmile Sirona took up the running and

showed the way to the straight to Coronis, Whakapava, and British Columbia, with the remainder bunched. C'oroiiis and Sirona then drew away, the former prevailing by a neck. King's Archer vjust defeated British Columbia for third place, both horsesi being rather unlucky, while ,H»nipton Park and Whakapara did best' pi the others..', ■. Greek Gold drew wide djiti and was always in trouble. Both the firit and- second horses will improve...1 '■•-, ■;. .'-';;{.\\ ■' ■• '. ■ ;'- ■ ' Bain Dance displayed brilliancy to win the Anniversary.' /Handicap all the : way, and he should isoon; show further improvement. Tuaheahe just held !oir long enough to nose onfr King:Meetor for' second, the latter finishing very fast! IMaine was slow out of the barrier, and. then met on the trip, so his fourth was not without merit.. (Scotch Nation was prominent to the "home turn, and then he faded out.. ■•' ■•.: ■. .;' RESULTS IN DETAIL.
