AUSTRALIAN TRADE
The Federal, Cabinet is expected to give attention soon to the appointment of trade commissioners in the East. AHjiough Parliamentary approval was obtained many months ago for such appointments abroad, only one trade commissionerhas been appointed—Mr. R. H. Nesbitt, in New Zealand. ■ -■The Government contemplated: the appointment of commissioners at Batavia and in Shanghai or; Hong Kong. Subsequently the Ministry decided that appointments in those places should be deferred until the return from the East of the mission' led by the then Attorney-General (Mr. Latham). No action was taken after Mr. Latham's return, and the elections caused further postponement of the appointments. The Ministry will consider a euggestion that in addition-to those two appointments Australia should have a representative in.Tokib. If such an appointment is madej the Ministry may select Mr. E.Longfield Lloyd, an officer of the investigation branch of .the AttorneyGeneral's Department, at present stationed in Sydney. Mr. Lloyd, who has a knowledge -;of the Japanese .language and has made a study of Japanese affairs, accompanied Mr. Latham to Japan last year.
