TUNNEL VENTILATION
PROVISION ADEQUATE
A description of the ventilation I system in tho Mount Victoria traffic | tunnel was given to the conference of tho New Zealand branch of the Royal : Sanitary Instituto today by Mr. F., N, Thompson, Assistant City Engineer,, Wellington. ■' , The system, he said, was designed to prevent the concentration of -carbon . monoxide exceeding 6 parts in 10,000 | when tho tunnel was full to designed | capacity, and without assistance fromj natural ventilation. Complainti .had been made that ventilation was insufj'ficlent by reason of tire'fact that nrotorp ists had noticed a haeiness and oilincss on their windscreens. Carbon monoxidq, however, was tasteless, colourless; ,and odourless, and could not produce*any of the effects complained of. The twb full years' operation of - the tunnel showed that the daily traffic averaged approximately 4000 vehicles, and that it had been necessary _tp , operate the fans on about 250 occasions per ye"ai\ Minimum fan velocities wcrb usually sufficient, and the periods of operation generally short. >
