DEATH IN TARARUAS
DEER-STALKER SHOT
DIES WHILE BEING CARRIED OUT
As the result of being shot through j the chest while on a deer-stalking expedition in the Tararua Ranges yesterday, Charles James Galliers died , while being carried on a stretcher out. of the'bush. The deceased was a mar-' ried man, with a seven-months-old child. He lived in Austin Street, Wellington, was 23 years of age, and was an electrical engineer.
A party consisting of Henry William Gallicrs, Frank Hugh Galliers, Charles Galliers, and Malcolm Davidson left home on Saturday to go shooting in the Tauhcrenikau Valley. They camped the night in tin old opossum hut. On the following day, about noon, they were descending a steep slippery bank to a creek when Henry Galliers, who was in front, slipped. Frank Galliers, who was behind him, also slipped, and his rifle was discharged, the bullet entering the body of Charles Galliers below tho left breast and coming out below the left shoulder .blade. Henry Galliers remained with his brother and tried to stop the bleeding while Frank Galliers and Davidson went back to the hut for blankets and to get the assistance of sonic trampers. Frank Galliers returned in about an hour's time with a party from the Tararua Tramping Club, and Davidson went to Kaitoke to ring for a doctor and the ambulance. The trampers started to carry Charles Galliers out of "the bush on a rough stretcher. , A party.headed by Constable C. Stewart of Upper Ilutt, and accompanied by Dr. Gilmer and his wife, who is a trained nurse, set out from Kaitoke at 2 pm. The two parties met at 5 p.m., and the wounded man died a few minutes afterwards. A stretcher party from tho Wellington Free Ambulance also went into the bush. Tho party from the bush arrived at Kaitoke at 8 pm and the body was taken by the Free Ambulance to the morgue at Lower Hutt.
