DAY IF PARLIAMENT
THE FINANCIAL DEBATE Another full day was spent by the House of Representatives yesterday in discussing the Financial Statement, but apart from a thoughtful contribution by the ex-Minister of Finance (the Hon W. Downie Stewart) there was little of note in any of the speeches. Apart from Mr. Stewart, it was really a day for back-benchers and the speeches covered ground that has already been worn threadbare. Mr. Stewart spoke for just over an hour and he made a critical survey of the main provisions of the '.Budget. His remarks were followed with close attention, and no doubt he will receive special attention from tho Minister of Finance (the Et. Hon. J. G. Coates) when he replies to the debate. The Legislative Council passed the Gaming Amendment Bill, providing for the double totalisator and the publication of dividends, without amendment.
