THE R.S.A.

Contrary to the usual idea of the' decorations of soldiers' club rooms, barbed-wire entanglements and sandbags were conspicuous by their absence on a recent evening-, when the new clubrooms of the Hutt A'alley branch of the R.S.A., in High Street, Lower Hutt, were opened for dancing. There was a very large attendance. Gay autumntinted curtains at the windows and large black and white cartoons, including "Old Bill" and "Our Bert," of Bairnsfather fame, painted on the white walls by a young artist, Reg. Hollands, together with _ framed cartoons by a local soldier artist, gave the hall a very attractive appearance. The floral decorations were also very tastefully arranged. The ladies' committees of both boroughs spared no pains to- make the elubrooms among the finest in the Valley. Mae Robertson's orchestra supplied the music. Mr. E. A.'Toomath acted as M.C. During the evening the pupils of Miss Eva Draper gave an exhibition dance. During the supper interval, Mr. G. Hayton (president of the Hutt Valley branch) thanked everyone for their, attendance, and said the elubrooms had been twenty years materialising, and he hoped they would be the scene of many happy gatherings of ex-servicemen and their womenfolk. He also spoke of the splendid work of those ex-servicemen who had laid the' dance floor, and to their women friends for their valuable assistance. He appealed to all ex-ser-vicemen present, who were not yet members of the E.S.A. to join up and help make the club a success for all time. The badge was an honourable one, and should be worn by all those entitled to do so. The official party was as follows: Mr. and Mrs. G. Hayton, Colonel and Mrs. C. E. Butcher, M*rs. J. AV.
