WELLINGTON CLUB'S YEAR

PROPOSALS FOR; NEW SEASON *

The Wellington ; Amateur-. Athletic Club can boast of'activities' extending over fifty years. •; It ". .is., the .oldest ; amateur athletic club in'the province, and it is evident, fr6m the annual report, that permeating' the efforts' , of ) tho present-day-official* therois a keen, desire to ; maintain; the fine traditions that have been- built-up and to keep the Club in the forefront. Last year a gratifying measure; of support was given by all members, but particularly by the juniors. -The conimitteej made use of thelarger portion of the credit balance fwin last ,-y.ear towards the cost of bringing the' engraving of the cups up to date, find, although only a small credit balance is shown, in view ' of the activitiesrand outstanding sub- : scriptions, it is considered, this need ' cause no concern... ■ , •" ■ The activities of the .past season are reviewed in detail, and prospects for the coming season, are . also discussed. ■ Provided satisfactory' terms, can' be arranged, training operations - are to be - transferred from Athletic Park to the Basin Keserve. As the ; Basin Reserve is only available at ( certain hours, it that this will make members train together, thus fostering, the club spirit and also .enabling the ',-. coaches to work more efficiently. Moreover, it is contended that las the Basia Reservo is more central it will be mora -' convenient for the majority, of. members and a -greater number of spectators -will.be attracted. Commenting oa the various competitions last season, the/ report, in regard to the Dewar '■ Shield contest,' states that the club's • executive looks".'forward to. theprospect of afternoon or electric, light meetings being held, for this -trophy ,; in the iuture v The view is held that, such meetings ; would be more popular; with, the public. LADIES' BRANCH. A general improvement in the ladies* branch of tho club is recorded. It is felt that the system adopted at the last annual meeting of giving the ladies', ■ branch representation oh the general' committee has had. the effect of creating a better all round; in short, that the move; has been more than justified. The membership of the ladies' branch,; - .however-, is not yet considered to be what it- should be, and a special canvass is suggested to bring it up to' full strength.' Tho ladies contpeted with a fair measure of success throughout the season, "and were successful in retaining the Biddifor'd Belay Cup and also the provincial relay title. Through the 'energies of Mr. A. J. Hose, a number of hew members have - linked up with the club and /will be competing during the coming season. Tho club also has been fortunate inobtaining the services of several'first- ': class trainers and coaches. Members . are urged to-bring as niahy new'mem-• bors and'supporters to the annual meeting as possible; and thereby contribute . towards making the club tho premier one. The club" has obtained permission to hold an art union, and it is; hoped ;. by, this moans to improve the finances. . of the club and "advance- the cause of", amateur athletics in Wellington'. 1 '" ..:
