THE COMPETITIONS
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —As a visitor to your city, nncl olio greatly interested in the cultivation of music, I wish to compliment tho Competitions Society upon its recent festival, at the concluding demonstration concert of which I was able to be present. The president madesome very important suggestions to which I trust the- musical portion of this city will give it.s serious attention. I also trust that heed will bo given to his Excellency's valuable comments, for it is certain that the competitions are of great value in stimulating tho talent of all kinds which is evidently very much abroad in this city. The president rightly commented upon the -verypoor support afforded the society, in that out of such a large population as is possessed by the City of Wellington, only about 100 of them are members of the Wellington Competitions Society. I trust, Sir, that I may be pardoned if I offer some suggestions in the hope that they may be of some assistance towards tho future and even greater success of the competitions festivals. Firstly, and. this was referred to by his Excellency, I think that the inclusion of really Native music would be
of grout valuo and much interest. I would also urge that a vigorous campaign for support, from teachers of music be inilinteil, ami that in the selection of test pieces their help bo enlisted— anil I know that, if they were approached in Iho right spirit much good would accruel. Lastly, a word in connection with the programme us presented on Saturday night. 1 had heard during the festival, l.iy means of the radio, items which should certainly have been included, but for some obscure reasons were not. When the demonstration concerts are being arranged I should suggest the appointment of a. special selection committee which should include the adjudicators of the different sections. This would help to ensuro that the public were presented with only the most, outstanding performances during tho festival.—l am, etc.,
VISITOR,
