AMATEUR BOXING

WELLINGTON TOURXEY

FIRST NIGHT'S RESULTS

Though there were one or two lively bouts, the general standard of the boxing at tlie Town Hall last night, when the preliminaries of the senior Wellington amateur championships were decided, was somewhat disappointing, particularly in comparison with the standard set by the juniors a month ago. Better exhibitions, however, should bo given tonight, when the finalists will meet. There was also room for improvement in tho manner in which the tournament was conducted. Though the programme was advertised to commence at 7.30 p.m., it was after S o'clock before a start was made and, with delays between some of the bouts causing further time to be lost, it was well on towards midnight before tho last bout had been decided. The following were the officials:—Referee, Mr. B. A. Guise; judges, Messrs. P. W. Woods and W. P. Sommerville; announcer, Mr. A. G. MeGowan. FLYWEIGHT. L. Liirsen (Xewtown), Bst, defeated K. Coveney (Miramar), Bst, on points. It was an even bout, but Larsen had sufficient in his favour to make the decision indisputable. H. Allott (Miramar), 7st 12541b, defeated W. Jones (Miramar), 7st ll%lb. With two evently-matched boys from the same gymnasium in the riug, fireworks were not to be expected, but the display was fast and clever, with Allott a shade the faster. BANTAMWEIGHT. V. Fiunegan (Newtown), Bst Gib, defeated D. Sindall (Miramar), Bst (jib. The crowd found the bout entertaining, but it wag left to Finncgan to provide most of tho science. S. Donoghue (Miramar), Sst 61b, defeated J. McDonald (Newtown), Bst 5%1b, the latter being.disqualified in the second round for going down without being hit. Thero was an argument at the outset when it was discovered that Donoghue had his gloves tied so that they could not open. The referee ordered them to be untied. FEATHERWEIGHT. R. Wood (Miramar), Ost, defeated H. Knopp (Newtown), Sst 12%1b, on points. Wood secured his points mostly during tho in-fighting and also presented a solid defence, but the margin in his favour was not great. W. Aitken (Newtown), Sst 12J/£lb, defeated G. Marshall (Miramar), 9st, on points. It was an interesting contest, with very little between the contestants. Aiken was the more scientific boxer and the faster hitter, but was faced with a rugged opponent who scored in the infighting. H. Dunn (Mocra), Bst 3%1b. defeated G. Bridge. (Newtown), Sst B%lb, by a technical knock-out in the last round. Bridge took a terrific amount of punishment and fought- back gamely until the finish. LIGHTWEIGHT. S. . Smith (Miramar), 9s't 7%1b, defeated J. Hanson (Tartan), Ost iVAh, on points. The bout was evenly contested but Smith left little doubt as to his right to the decision. L. Murray (Moera), Ost 71b, defeated G. Walsh (Theyer's)j 9st G%lb, on points. Walsh was on the canvas when, the second round finished, but recovered during the interval. Though he was severely pun: isheel he was fighting back vigorously in the final stages. W. Hedberg (Tartan), Ost 71b, defeated E. Adams (Miramar), Ost 71b, on points. Adams, who is the junior champion for the division, again followed the plan of using his height and reach to pick up points with a jabbing left and occasional right. Hedberg, short and stocky, bore in constantly but could make little headway against the gloves flicking.against his face and keeping him back. Hedberg once or twice got inside Adams's guard in the last round .and felled Adams for ii count of nine. The'decision in Hedberg's favour was something of a surprise, hut factors which apparently; counted in his favour were his aggressiveness and stronger finish. WELTERWEIGHT. R. Cameron (Miramar), lOst 71b, defeated J.. Larigley (Silvel-stream), lOst 31b, on points.- . It was an uninspiring contest in which Cameron scored maiuly by throwing in punches .while standing off, and Langley did best in the in-fighting. Though Langley was willing, Cameron was clearly tho better boxer. T Arbuthnott (Miramar), lOst 6%1b, defeated W. G. Parris (Tartan), lOst 2%1b, on points, in an excellent bout. Parris sailed right in at the gong and connected with a left to the head, but the other boy, though slower, possessed ,i solid punch in either hand and, before the round ended, he made Parris proceed more carefully. Parris's ducking and weaving caused many of Arbuthnott's punches to miss', but, more than once the Tartan boy paid the penalty of turning his back on his opponent. . Parris picked up some points towards the finish. MIDDLEWEIGHT. R. Reid (Crawford), list 41b-, defeated A. Perrett (Silverstream), lOst 91b, on points. Reid was the aggressor practically throughout the first round:and used his reach to score some useful points from a safe' distance. Ho had too many guns for Perrett, who, however, provided spirited opposition. • LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT. J. Jones (Miramar), 12st 41b, defeated 11. Dawson (Tracy's), 12st 51b, on points. Dawson spoilt his display by not closing his gloves. Those to whom the reason for his defeat was not apparent made a demonstration against the judges. N. Millar (Miramar), list lMfelb, defeated P. Burke (Crawford's), list 5%1b, on points. The exhibition was marred by too much clinching, practically the only clean, blows being struck in the second round.
