BOXING
PALMER OUTPOINTS NICOU
FAIRLY EASY VICTORY
(By Telegraph— Press Association.) •INVERCARGILL, September 1.
Before a crowd of over 2000, Ambrost Palmer (Australia) and Ray Nicol (Southland) fought here last night, Palmer winning on points. Both men are champions in their countries. Palmer scaled 12st 21b, and Nicol 12et 91b. As in his fight with Strickland, Palmer had a fairly easy victory, his pace and cleverness giving him a decided advantage over the New Zealander, who relied on boring tactics and in-fighting to wear his opponent down. Palmer's ringcraft was too much for Nicol in these exchanges, however,, and gener» ally the visitor emerged with the honours.
it was a hard, fast fight all through, with Nicol standing up to punishment in great 6tyle. He was severely punished in the middle and later rounds, and at the finish had his right eye closed up. Nicol's weight and strength enabled him to rush Palmer to the ropes, but beyond that he had no advantage whatever. Palmer's weak left eyebrow was opened in the fifth round, not as the result of a punch, but in a souffle of heads and arms. He tried to knock out Nicol in the seventh, but found the New Zealander, too fit and rugged. Palmer injured his left hand, and will not now meet Campbell at Timaru oil Wednesday. . : .V;
