PETONE REACH FINAL

Defeating Lower Hutfc by a score of 3 goals to 1, Petone reached the final, of .the.AuJd Memorial Cup at the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon. The teams were:— ' Petone.—Watson; Brown, llaines; White, Campbell, Smith; Kennedy, McGrory, Leslie, Cunningham, Woods. Lower Hutt.—Body; Gardner, Rutland; McDougall, Hazel. Stobbs; Batchelor, Cross, Jessep, McGrath, Holmes. Playing with the wind in the first half, Lower Hutt, who had made a general change round in their team at the last moment, did not reveal their usual combination, but were near scoring nevertheless. Brown was the man who checked then.1 movements before they could become too dangerous, and ho kept feeding the Petone forwards, linking nicely with the left wing. Cunningham almost opened the way for a score, 'luck saving Lower Hutt, who were quick to appreciate their escape and began some hot. attacks. . Ifauies. saved one goal when Hazel sent across to Holmes, who almost- found the net, but McDougall was handy, and before long the ball was through the posts, giving Hutt a one-goal lead. It was a fast and open game now, with the Petone players' moving better than their opponents and scoring chances being squandered rather freely by the winners. Body, however, must bo given 'the credit for keeping the goal intact for some time; ho was showing splendid form and saving what seemed to be unstoppable shots. Finally. Campbell' sent his forwards away and McGrory beat the defence and netted. A minute or two later Leslie put Petone ahead with a solid drive which gave the goalie no chance, and at half-time the score was Petone 2, Lower Hutt 1. With the wind in their favour, Petone's hold on the game tightened and Lower Hntt were kept busy defending. Body saved again from a shot by McGrory after Leslie had opened the way, and after some time the losers began to make some spirited attacks, but could not really bustle the Petone defence. ' Jessep gained a chance at last, but shot too high and Petone worked back. Woods and Cunningham almost succeeding in gaining the goal which -would put the issue beyond doubt. At last McGrory took a chance given bim and the match ended Petone 3, Lower HiiU 1. . The referee was Mr. J. Duncan.
