WAGES CUT

PARTIAL RESTORATION

GAS BOARD EMPLOYEES

Tho Peiouc.and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board decided unanimously last evening to restore- 5 per cent, of the 10 per cent, cut imposed on tho wages of. the staff in June, 1031. The cut also applied to members of the board, who will share in the restoration.

The restoration of. .5 per cent, of the cut was moved by Mr. A. Scholefield and seconded by Mr. W. G. Meldrum. " Mr. D. W. Campbell said that he thought it was tho board's duty to undertake a revision of the wages of the. staff. Ho mentioned a particular ease in which'he thought an employee was paid too low. Mr. C. P. Broekelbank stated that, sonic members of -the staff were fairly well paid and some were not. The board should not consider the question of each -man's dependants,, etc. when considering the wages.

The secretary (Mr. 0. Silbery) pointed out that the board was saved about £700 annually by the 10 per cent, cut, so a 5 per cent, restoration represented £350. . -. :.../.

When the motion was passed, Mr. Scholefield said that it should be pointed out, in fairness to the board, that members of the board were entitled to payment for attendance.at each 'meeting, but payment had never been claimed for attendance at special meetings.
