SHEEP AND WOOL

FEDERATION MEETING

The opinion was .expressed at the annual meeting yesterday of the New Zealand Sheepowners' and Farmers' Federation that the improvement of flocks in New Zealand, could be. most effectively carried out by stud breeders and breed societies. The certification of rams proposed by the Eomney and Corriodalo Breed Societies was approved as a move in the right direction, and it was felt this should be followed by other breed societies.

So far as research into the manufacture and general treatment of wool fibro is concerned, the meeting confirmed tho arrangement entered into with the Prime Minister, and agreed to the amount allocated to New Zealan,d provided the. other wool-producing countries within the-Empire,-including the United Kingdom, paid their quota on a sheep population basis in the following proportions:—

Sheep population. Proportion. (Millions.) & Australia ..... 110 10,500 South Africa ..45 . 4300 New Zealand .. 29 2SOO United Kingdom 26 ' . : . 2400 210 £20,000

FIELDEN TAYLOR'S DAFFODIL FAIR

For the past three years the Rev. Fielden Taylor has found it increasingly difficult to meet the demand for assistance. There are two chief avenues of need —the men for whom bed and meals are provided in the Men's Shelter, and married men on sustenance or relief pay who are unable to make ends meet. ■

Funds have been so short that he has been and still is forced to refuse admission to the Men's Shelter to'men who are tlforoughly deserving. In spite of this there are always over a hundred men in the shelter. The number of families to whom weekly relief was given has been curtailed, but many of the more pressing and deserving cases still receive help every week.

In order to ease the financial situation, Mr. Fielden Taylor is organising a fair, to be called the Daffodil Fair, in the T6wn Hall from September 8 to 15, inclusive. The fair will be opened by her Excellency Lady Bledisloe, and a splendid programme has been arranged for the week. It is hoped to clear £1500, i.-id every attempt is being made to cut down expenses. The cause is commended. to the sympathy and support of.all. Straight-out donations, or gifts of food, produce, books, or articles for sale on the stalls will be most warmly appreciated. The need is desperate, and must appeal to all who know what Fielden Taylor has done in the city for the past fifteen years.
