At Bye, New York, in the first round of the Eastern grass courts championships on Monday, Miss Betty Nuthall (Britain) defeated Miss Helen Jacobs (New York), 6-2, 6-0. Miss Stammers defeated Miss Helen Pederson (Stamford, Conn.), 7-5, 6-3. Miss Freda James defeated Miss Helen Murray (Yonkers, N.Y.), 6-1, 6-0.
