R.S.A. AUXILIARIES

RECENT ACTIVITIES

GOOD WORK BEING DONE

Intended primarily as a means of relieving distress and privation among ex-servicemen, the formation of district auxiliary committees of tho K.S.A. lias been the means of reviving and maintaining the camaraderie of the

war years. During the past year or so these committees have been of material

assistance in various ways to many less fortunate comrades in the- respective districts, and in catering for tho social side of their activities they have been the means of bringing old comrades together after a lapse of years to exchango reminiscences of wartime days, or enjoy a game of cards with a suppor and a sing-song to wind up the evening.' By means of tho E.S.A. subsidised labour scheme they have been able, assisted by headquarters, to iind casual work in their districts for unemployed comrades, and each committee has been very active in its efforts in this direction. Naturally their efforts are limited by tho funds available, and concerts, socialfi, dances, card parties, and other money-raising activities aro resorted to in order to augment the ammunition with which to carry on the barrage against privation —one of the most relentless enemies mankind has ever had to combat.

Johnsoiiville. —Tho social activities in Johnsonvillo havo boon quiet, but tho provision of temporary -work for unemployed diggers has been persevered with. One or two unemployed exsoldicrs havo found permanent work, bul; tho executive stilt has 19 unemployed diggers on its lists. Mirumar. —On July 30 a very successful social and dance was held at the Kio Grande Cabaret, tho ladies "who so generously assisted with "Bosc" and "Poppy" days being guests of the. executive. Tho usual monthly korcro was held on August 1-1 at the Airport Tearooms, when a number of well-known artists contributed to a most enjoyable programme Despite tho unpleasant weather the attendance was very en-

couragiug.

Island Bay.—The auxiliary committoo is considering the urgent need of a elubroom and hopes to acquire one in tho near future. In the meantime very enjoyable dances are being arranged fortnightly, and the Tin Hat Club concert party is to givo a concert at the Island Bay Masonic Hall on September

Brooklyn.—This committee is giving consideration to the establishment of a elubroom, and its social activities are becoming increasingly popular. It is barely a year since this auxiliary was formed, but it has alroady made its prcseneo felt in the distriet'and is now seeking fresh fields of activity. Karori. —This auxiliary committee is to hold a reunion of "Diggers" at the Scout Hall next Saturday evening, and the enthusiasm among returned men in Karori, Northland, and Makaru, promises well for the success of this function. Upper Hutt—A very successful children's fancy dress ball was held in the Silverstreaui Hall on Thursday, August 16, in aid of the Upper Hutt K.S.A. "Diggers' Fair" fuud. The arrangements, were in the.hands of Mrs. B. Smyrkoand an efficient ladies' committee. Mr. and Mrs. .Webster were tho judges of l-he fancy dresses. The president, of tho branch (Mr. W. C. Woofmdir.) addressed the assembly and at 10 o'clock tho hall was cleared for a dance, Mr. Webster acting as M.C. Tho prize-winners for the fancy dresses were: Girls (over 10), ¥. Kurth ("Sacked"); boys (over 10), 11. Brown ("Mac"); girls (under 10), B. McConkcy ('Trench Doll"); boys (under 10), P. Oit ("Clown"). Special prizes were awarded to J. Hamilton ("Lifebuoy"); L. Brown (."Rubbish Dump") , and N. Toy ("Spring"). Card parties are held weekly and arrangements, two in hand for a social evening. Seatoun.—The executivo is actively engaged seeking suitable casual^ work for the thirty unemployed on its register. A canvass.of tho district is being undertaken in an endeavour to rind seasonal work such as gardening, repair work, etc. Social evenings are held each month, the last having beea held in the Seatoun Bowling Club's pavilion on Wednesday, August 15. A special feature of the evening's entertainment was an interesting and informative lecturettc on "Bridges," by Mr. A. Tyndall, Under-Secretary for Mines. Others contributm;; to tho programme were Messrs. F. Histed, T. Allen, H. Weston, and Ganley, and v bright spell of community singing was conducted by Mr. G.|T. Kelloway. The vice-chairman (Mr. 11. A. Fansclow) reported on the work of the executive in the district, stating that during the month £20 had been, expended in connection, with subsidised work in the district.
