MIRAMAR TENNIS CLUB

Iv presenting its third annual report tho committee of the Miramar Tennis (Jlub expresses pleasure at being able to record a continuance of the rapid progress evinced during the previous two seasonsboth as regard membership and the standard of play. The season closed with the membership full and vacancies for new members are now only available when a. resignation is received. It is intended to keep the membership at its present limit for the ensuing season, but in subsequent seasons to lower the membership.

Nine teams were entered in the Welling* ton Lawn Tennis Assocition's inter-club competitions, viz, two teams in the men's third division, one team in the women's third division, two teams in the fourth, division, two in the fifth division, and two in the sixth division. Attention. to practice nnd the experience gained in match play-during the preceding seasons, together with the ability to obtain within. our own club experience in diverse types of play, was evident in the high standard of play revealed by the members comprising the various teams. The third A men's team was runner-up in their section of the division and the third B team the winner of their-section, and in-the play-oft' for the division championship the B team was defeated by Newtown. The third women's team finished well up ..5u their grade and deserve great credit for no auspicious a. start in higher grade tennis. Both the fourth division teams finished at the top of their respective _ sections and met one another for the divigion championship, the B team defeating the A after a close and keenly-fought contest. Both teams are to be highly commended for their consistent play during the eea« son and to them goes the kouour of being the first two teams from the same club to have met in a championship final in the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association* inter-club championships. The fifth division teams, while not .faring quite so well, nevertheless showed aa improving standard of play as the 6easou progressed, a continuance of which will enable them to go further in the forthcoming season Both sixth division teams, notwithstanding tho numerous . alterations during the season in their personnel, played exceedingly well, the B team, after a meritorious performance, winning' the division championship. The members of the teams in this division are to be highly commended on their performances, as in most-instances it was their first essay in inter-club tennis. The winning of two championships wil! necessitate promotion for the two teams concerned; this, together with the climber of players whoso standard of piay warrants their inclusion in inter-club tennis, will probably require a higher grading of all teams. Approximately ninety members participated in these matches, and the benefit and enjoyment derived from participation in the contests was greatly enhanced by the splendid sporting spirit displayed by the various opponents. Tho accounts of the club show a # small excess, of receipts over expenses. This can he considered very satisfactory in view of the fact that the clubroom has been considerably enlarged and the volley board erected during the year. As the expenses of the club are over £100 per month during tho first three months of each season, the committee earnestly appeals to each and every member to assist by prompt payments of subscriptions and thereby avoid having to pay interest on overdraft.
