LIFE-SAVING

ISLAND BAY CLUB

A SUCCESSFUL YEAR

A considerable increase in membership and n stable Jinancial -position are indicated in the annual report for this year of the Island Bay Life-savins and Surf Club. The Jinancial membership of the club now .stands at S3, of whom 51 are

men, 27 are women, and five arc juniors. A reduced subscription scheme was adopted, and eight boys of under 10 years wore allowed to join on probation. Of these, two wore member's of the team which won the Law Rose liowl at Paekakariki early this year. During the. past season there has been a movement towards starting a club library, and this is now almost in operation.

Outside the club several members, notably Messrs. J. D. Hunter, W. S. Harris, .]. ,M. Arthur, and 2scal, have spent much time in instructional work. A display was-given to the Women's Association of the Overseas Legion of Frontiersmen; several.displays and a considerable amount of instruction were given to members of the Police Force, and instruction to .a class of cadets from the St. John Ambu!ace Association. In the latter case, the instruction lias been, kept up right through the winter, with the result that the class is practically ready to qualify for the elementary certificate of the Royal Life-saving Society. TROPHIES AND AWARDS. The. various club races were keenly contested, and as a result of good handicapping very close finishes were a feature of most of the races. . Practically all the work in connection with the conducting of these races fell to Messrs. W. S. Harcris and G. T. Boocock, and they are congratulated on the manner in which they carried it out. The following are , the winners of the various -club trophies:— Coy Cup (club championship), J. Dawson; Ricketts Cup (880 yds handicap), G. Perry-,; Brabin Cup (beltmen's champion-, ship), J. M. Arthur;1 Lethaby Shield (short-distance aggregate), A. Herron; Bilderbeck Cup (grand aggregate), A. Herron; Hough ton Bay Cup (junior championship), J. Jenkins;;Mason Medal (run-ner-up . Bilderbeck Cup), J. M. Arthur; silver medal (runner-up Lethaby Shield), H. Tonks; Odlin Shield (four-men runout), J. Dawson, D. Hunter, J. Arthur, and E. Smith. ■ , The following awards were gamed by members during the season:— 1 Bronze Medallion o£ the Royal Lifesaving Association. —H. S. Tonks, L. L. Livingstone, L. W. Murrell,- E. G. .Burton, B. M. Harris, J. E. Jenkins. Surf Medallion of the New Zealand burf Association.—ll. S. Tonks, L. E. Livingstone, E. G. Burton, J. E. Jenkins, A. Clarke, P. Leadsman. The club has taken an active part m life-saving competitions during the season, and lias again succeded in winning two trophies, namely, the Law Rose Bowl, which was won by tho club's novice team, and the Williams Marching Cup, which was won by the senior team at Waugamu. The novice team, trained by Mr. Neal, gave a sterling display. The y Williams Marching Clip carries with it the -West Coast march past championship. In the combined land-drill and run-out at Wancaniii, lor the ITixekshaw-Searle Shield,; the club was narrowly beaten by Ohawe, and was placed second out of nine teams. In the opinion of the committee, the results obtained at Wanganukprove definitely that the. club should endeavour to send a team to compete outside of Wellington at least once during the season, as this gives an added incentive to members to train, and consequently a higher standard of*'efficiency is attained.
