WETHERSTONES' AFFAIRS

(By Telegraph) (Special to the "Evening Fjgst.") DUNEDIN, rThis Day. From information put before the shareholders in the Wetherstones Gold Mining Co., Ltd., at the first annual meeting, it was - obvious that the company's operations must cease until such time as the directors secure, sufficient funds to complete development.work and to enable the company to start mining operations. The chairman of directors (Mr. James Fletcher) explained that it bad been decided by the Mines Department and Unemployment Board that, as they were not getting values on bottom they should cease operations until a' geophysical survey had been taken on the whole of the bottom. ■ . ■ ■ ' The survey would take, about three weeks, and the directors would then hold a conference, with the Mines Department and the Unemployment Board. A WORD TO INVESTORS. The Australasian Institute, of Mining and Metallurgy (Incorporated) has written, to "stock'exchanges throughout. Australia suggesting that before members ot stock exchanges associated themselves with the promotion' of mining, companies they; should satisfy themselves in regard to the probity and the qualifications of the persons upon whose reports the ' prospectuses are based. A- suggestion ■is also . made in . the letter that <a measure of protection would result if reports were made by member's vof recognised technical institutions connected with the mining and metallurgical industries, though it is not suggested that such reports should be limited to the members of such institutions. Where, however, reports from non-members are included, it is suggested in the letter that they be men of recognised -weight and experience in the profession. WORK AT MATAKI. Miitaki, Murchison, reports for the week ended August 4 that the dredge had a good run of' 132 hours' pulling ahead 54 feet on a face of 560 .feet for a return of 29* ounces; The bottom is still uneven and in -worked ground. Do not expect much improvement until the dredge gets past the tailings, which will take about four weeks and:then be in, solid ground.
