A SCUTTLEFUL OF PENNIES

A scnttjoi'ul' of "bun- pennies"—r pennies bearing the hoad of Queen Victoria with her familiar hair arrangement—^wer.e yesterday received by Princess; Alice Countess of Athlone at -the Eoyal Waterloo Hospital, London. The pennies, totalling more than-.'lo*ooo, were collected by members of the Ladies' Association for their annual meeting, over' which the Princess presided. Princess Alice offered, for one week, to Write a letter to the mother of each baby. whoso birth might be announced during' the period in certain newspapers. The letter will ask for support of.a, Happy 'Birthday Cot at the hospital, which was tho first children's hospital in the world.
All the people having at heart the welfare of the hospital have been collecting these coins for some time, and some consignments were quite a weight to carry down for the presentation ceremony. New Zealanders are sure to be interested, by the way, to know that this is the hospital where Dr. Bernard Myers (lato of Auckland) is so well known for the valuable voluntary work which he performs as senior visiting physician; lie haR been attending the, Eoyal "Waterloo Hospital regularly for
