AN AUCKLAND PAGEANT
A SPECTACULAR SIGHT
Tho drama pageant presented in. Auckland on Tuesday night was a most spectacular sight. The Town Hall was transformed into "Sherwood Forest" with lovely treos, suggestions of glades and distant vistas, and made a perfect background for the wonderful colouring of tho costumes worn by the performers. These were in keeping with the period carried out, tho England of the Plaatagencts. "Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine" was a striking figure in a dress of Wade velvet, caught in front to show a tunic of cloth of silver and finished with ii broad, jewelled girdle. Her train was of deep-blue velvet powdered with the rose of England and fleur-de-lis 01! Prance, and bordered with ermine. ■ A 1 long silver veil fell from a jewelled crown. "King Richard" wore a tunicle. of Eoyal -purple velvet slashed with cloth 'of gold and embroidered '■ with, jewels. Underneath was a tunic of gold mail, and over 'all a gold-lined scarlet cloak, bordered with ermine, ' The "ladies-in-waiting" and "pages" were dressed in rich colonrs and garments suited to tho period. "Maid Marion" wore a wine-coloured velvet tunic and doublet, and later a frock of white satin girdled and veiled. "Eobin Hood" wore green velvet with a short scarlet-lined cloak, and he was accompanied by "Friar Tuck" and "a merry band of outlaws." The dancers, varlets, crossbowmon, village children, and numerous other performers were all dressed to' period, and the. entire pageant was a triumph, of harmonious colouring and effective grouping.
