CONFERENCE SUGGESTED
RE-ESTABLISHMENT SCHEME
The Mayor of Temuka has written to tie Makara County Council stating that at a meeting of citizens hold in Temuka to discuss the unemployment situation tho "unanimous opinion was 'expressod that any steps which might ibe takon to improve tho position locally would only give temporary relief, and that in order to make any progress in getting the unemployed back to their usual employment a national scheme was necessary. It was suggested that tho Government should call a conference of representatives of local authorties with tho object of framing a national scheme to get, peoplo back into remunerative and civil employment; tho conference to be held in Wellington before the end of the present session of Parliament. The Mayor of Temuka said he did not deem it necessary to stato the facts which caused dissatisfaction with the present administration of the Unemployment fund. Ho would like to know if the Makara County Council would appoint a representative to attend tho conference.
At a meeting of the Makara County Council today tho chairman (Councillor R. W. Bothamley) remarked that he did not think the fund was being frittered away; ho was of opinion that it was being well administered.
Councillor E. Windley said that at a recent meeting of the council he suggested that steps should bo takon to adopt a general policy in dealing with unemployment, but nothing had been dono in that reapect. Ho thought the couucil Bhould support tho suggestion that a conference be held.
After brief discussion, it was rosolved, on tho motion of ■ Councillor Q. 11. Phillips, tho suggestiou to hold a eonfereneo bo approved, and Councillor' E. Windley is to represent the Makara County Council at tho conference.
