PRUNUSES

BEAUTIFUL FLOWERING

SHRUBS

Thc'l'runus is ;i charming garden subject, Iho gonns including many very beautiful floworing shrubs and trees. It i.s a comprehensive term embracing as it does flowering almonds, apricots, peaches, plums, and cherries. The almonds are the earliest to flower, and specimens of these may bo seen in bloom in many gardens at tho present time. The flowers are cither pink of various shades or white. There are both single and double varieties, perhaps the best of the former being Prunus mume, "The Geisha," a very early-flowering Japanese apricot with claret-coloured blossoms which are sweiet-scented and produced in long sprays. Tho flowering plums, besides producing their charming sprays of flowers before tho foliage appears, have, in many cases, tho added advantage of beautiful'bronze foliage which makes

such a charming contrast, against the green of other-trees or shrubs.. Tho ilowering cherries aro well known and there are few more beautiful sights than a well-grown tree in full bloom. They arc taller growing than the other classes of Prunuses. The flowering season is somewhat short in all cases, but tho beauty of the foliage and tho carlinoss of ilowering are compensations.

" Tho Primuses aro easy to grow, thriving iii any ordinary garden soil where they have a reasonable amount of shelter from tho worst of the winds.
