BEATING THE SEASON
A WORD OF WARNING
Every season instances of gardeners trying "to beat the season are evident. While it ■is undoubtedly very satisfactory to get crops beforo one's neighbours, in ninety-nino cases out of a hundred tho effort fails. Tomato plants are already proeurablo at the various shops, but they arc intended for planting under glass only. These plants are "tender" and will not thrive until the soil is thoroughly warm and tho weather reasonably settled. Tho same applies to French and butter beans and other "tender" plants. Nothing is gained by planting too soon, and in all probability tho work will have to bo done over again if premature sowing or planting is. donein the open groud.
