SATURDAY'S GAMES

REPRESENTATIVE CONTESTS

GOOD FORM SHOWN

(By "King.")

Saturday's main attractions were the annual representative games between Wellington B and Canterbury B, and between the Taranaki aud Wellington thirds. As many local games as possible were held over to cnablo tlio majority of players to see these matches. Owing to the weather it was found necessary, to 'play inside, and, as a result, fourth grade- .and fifth grade games •vvero postponed. This was all the more unfortunate because certain fourthgrade fixtures for next Saturday may not be played now owing- to the fourthgrado representative team being absent in/Blenheim. Canterbury B v. Wellington B. This year's fixture proved more evenly contested than that of 1933, when Wellington woii by a big margin. Canterbury have speeded up their game considerably, but still rely too much on the long ■ pass. They ■ lost chance after chance in the forward third through this failing, F. Connor intercepting continually under the goal-post. Had Canterbury shortened the pass with their forwards coming: in more, Wellington ■would havo found .it very difficult to gain/the victory. ' As it was Wellington largely owed itsnvin to the interceptions made under.the post. The game was won by"Wellington by 14 goals to 11.-;y. -■■■•-■ v '•■•■■•.-■ Tarahaki-v. Wellington Thirds — a Draw. The beSt game yet played between tho-Taranalu and-Wellington thirds was that;.seen on Saturday. Taranaki attacked smartly; and within two minutes had -'-. scored -twice.' Their swift) clean passing .left the local players well behind for thofirs,t part of the game, and gave them a lead'of five goals. Spectacular-, intercepting by the visitors added,. to tho excitqment of the game, and "tho Wellington team had to fight hard - to: bring ' the * half-time scoro to 9->7. in. Taranaki *s favour. Play contijnued even throughout the second spell, aid-Wellington just succeeded in makhjg^it a rdraw,'l7:all, before .time was called. : ■ ;On Saturday's showing it .is a pity that.Taranaki arc not entering for the second-grado tournament because, on tho form shown,; they would have put uji a good fight- for the ■ president's trophy. Senior Game. 'The only senior A .fixture played was that .■between Kia Qra- and "University, the" fornier. team winning by 25 goalfc to.--.15. At the commencement University dominated play, their forwards finding no difficulty in evading tho Kia Ora defence. Kia Ora gradually improve/ and half-time found the score 14-11 in their favour. In the second spell Kia Ora readjusted their team, and were definitely superior throughout, tho forwards scoring in quick succession. Grade Divisions. Owing to the excellent progress made with the", competitions up to July 14 the management committee had decided to endeavour to play complete second rounds wherever possible'/ but, owing to the disappointing weather it lias now been found: necessary to make other

j'.rrangeincnts. ■■ Grades arid sections havo been divided in such a manner that'all the teams which have any hope at all of either winning or affecting the results, ■ will compete for, the, remaining matches. In no case i.ill.any team have an advantage in having jjlayed alii weaker ; teams in the first part of the second round. Only in this way can the championships be satisfactorily decided by the end of the season.

Therefore, if fixtures nro different to what teams expect, this arrangement is probably tho reason. Keferees' Association. The August meeting of tho Wellington Keferees' Association was held on Monday night, the following being present:—Mr. W. E. Howe (presiding), Mesdamos M. Granger, 11. IX JMuir, Misses Boales, Sturrock, Armstrong, McGuire, Messrs. Ede, Moller, Brcwin, MePherson, Proud, and Budden. It was decided to instruct referees to advise players that, should a. player continue playing after an injury, she docs so at her own risk. Rules discussed included the following:—"Tho throw-in shall bo taken and the player shall re-enter the court at tho spot indicated, i.e., at the spot whero the ball crosses tho lino." It was pointed out that tho majority of referees' were not enforcing this rule strictly enough, and it. was decided to ask all referees to do so. Tho question as to whether a player given a free pass because of the opposing centre failing to too the lino at the throw-off may throw directly to a: forward, was dismissed,, and the opinion was that she could do so. Eeferees reported on the nuisance of dogs at the grounds, and it was suggested that players be asked to refrain from taking dogs to the courts. New Zealand Tournament. Advico has been received that their Excellencies tho Governor-General (Lord Bledisloe) and Lady Blcdisloehavo consented to bo present at the New Zealand tournament, which his Excellency will officially open on Wed-nesday,-August 22. .With nearly 300 visiting players and officials the Otago Association will have a strenuous time. Tho programme includes a social, a supper party, and a dinner at which tho trophies will be presented. There is also a suggestion that a dance be included. Altogether, the visitors should be well entertained, and should have a most enjoyable time in Dunedin. SATURDAY'S FIXTURES.
