STOCK SALES

FIRM PRICES YESTERDAY

CATTLE SELLING WELL

Prices for livestock were again firm at the principal sales held in the Dominion yesterday and the demand for i'at cattle was particularly good. There was a good sale for prime heavy wethers at Johnsonvijle and heavy ewes were also firm. Good prices were realised for medium and heavyweight bullocks, but lijjiU and plain sorts were slightly easier. Owing to shipping' troubles the .North Island was practically unrepresented at the .National double market, at Addington, where an advance of up to 20s per nead took place in cattle. The quality of. the slieep yarded was .not up to the usual national standard. A lull yarding of cattle at Burnside made buyers cautious and the opening prices were down by about 20s per head on last week. The market subsequently recovered to the extent of about 10s per head. The yarding of 1400.fat sheep contained an excellent selection of good quality ewes and, apart from a slight drop towards the finish, prices for both ewes and wethers were Is per head better than last week. There was only a small entry of store cattle. There was a very heavy yarding of beef cattle at the Westfield sale, over 500 cows and heifers being penned. A good offering of steers included fewer extra heavy sorts. In spite of the large yarding the demand was sustained throughout, cows selling particularly well. The sheep pens were only quarter filled, and the quality was below the average with the exception of some prime ewes. Competition was good, and prices for ewes advanced about Is and for wethers .about 6d. JOHNSONVILLE SALE. Moderate yardings .of cattle and sheep came forward at the Johnsonville stock sale, held yesterday by Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd.,- and Abraham and Williams, Ltd. The bullocks yarded comprised chiefly medium weights, with a few pens of heavy ox. Prices for medium and heavyweights were firm at late rates; light and plain sorts were slightly easier. The majority of the heifers yarded were of exceptionally good quality, while cows were 'mostly plain and unfinished. Prime heavy heifers met with a keen demand, while light and unfinished were 5s per head easier. Heavy cows were firm, with little demand for plain sorts. Runners and vealers were yarded in larger numbers than usual, and they met with keen competition with no alteration in price. .Prime" heavy wethers sold well. There was no demand for light and unfinished sheep. Heavy ewes were firm on last week's sale; light and" medium weights showed no alteration in ' price. Only prime hoggets were sought after by butchers, light and plain sorts being unsaleable.
