DR, ALEXANDER LEEPER
MELBOURNE, August 7. The death has occurred of Dr. Alexander Leeper, M.A., LL.D., one of tho foremost classical scholars of Australia. His name is inseparably associated -u-ith Melbourno University ■as warden of Trinity College. Ho was S6 years of ;igc. '
' Dr. Lecpcr was born at Dublin in 1848 and educated at Trinity College, where he was an outstanding student, and St. John's College, Oxford. Ho was warden of Trinity College, Melbourne, from 1876 to 1918. He had been a member of the Melbourne) University Council, a'lay canon of St. Paul's Cathedral, president of tho Melbourne Public Library ana National Gallery, first president of the Classical Association, president of tho Loyal Irish Association of Victoria, vice-president of the Shakespeare Society, and vice-president of tho Victorian Council of Public Education. Under his direction the first Latin play and tho first Greek tragedy ever performed in Victoria were produced, and when ho staged "Stratford" in 1896 it was said to huvn been tho only instance of the performance- outsido Britain and America of a play by Itobert Browning.
