ROADS OF BRITAIN

"STREWN WITH DEAD AND DYING"

?'Tue roads of this country are, unhappily, strewn with dead and dying through criminal negligence and the careless driving of motor-cars."

This remark was made by Mr. Justice Goddard at Liverpool in sentencing William Henry' Carr, aged twenty-six, haulage contractor, of Silloth, Cumberland, to six months' imprisonment in the second division for the manslaughter of George Postlewaite Carter Taylor, aged thirty-five, Press photographer, of Carlisle, who was killed in !;i midnight motor collision at Cummers- ' i[ale, near Carlisle. | Commenting upon tho fact that the j jury had acquitted Carr of tho further j chargo of being drunk at the time of the accident, the Judge observed: "It is difficult to know what tho explanation of his negligent driving was, if it was not that he was under tho influence of liquor. I am not surprised that the jury have rejected your defence that you were dazzled by oncoming lights, which accounted for your being on the wrong sido of the road and hurling this man to his death." Tho Judge added that he would not be doing his duty to the public if he did not pass a sentence of imprison? ment, and ho told Carr that had the jury not acquitted him of being drunk liis sentence would have been far heavier. In addition to the sentence, Carr was disqualified from holding a driving licence for three years.' Notice of appeal was given.
