AMATEUR BOXING

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

PRELIMINARY BOUTS

Though mo&t of the boys who entered the ring at the Town Hall last night when the Wellington Boxing Association's 1931 junior championships were commenced have still much to learn of the finer points of the sport, every one of them tackled the job in hand with vigorous determination and the result was some stirring contests. One of the early bouts was quickly over, but the remainder of-a lengthy progiamme went the :'ull distance, nearly every pair that onWred'the ring being evenly matched and the meeting of tho winners in the' finals tonight should be responsible ior interesting and keen-fought bouts. Though the attendance was by no means largo it weis fairly satisfactory, and the boys were given a good hearing. Among those present was the Minister of Finance, the Ki. Hon. J. G. Coates. The officials were:— Referee, Mr. B. A. Guise; judges, Messrs G. P. Aldridge, P. W Woods, and W. P Rommerville; timekeepers, Messrs. W. N. Tucker and P N. Denton; announcer, Mr. A. G. McGowan. The results were: — Paperweight, T. Dunn (Cst 7?ilb) defeated C. Hamilton (7st) on points. Hamilton was faced with a boy well schooled in the liner points, who piled on sufficient points in the first two rounds to make his position secure against a vigorous counter-offensive in the last. Flyweight. K. Coveney (7st 131b) proved much 100 good for J. Wcekley (7st 12%1b), whom he defeated on h. technical knock-out in the first round. Weeklcy was on the defensive from tho outset, and after rising from a count of nine, was quickly foiled again, the referee then stopping the bout. J. Parker (7st ll%lb) defeated J. Triweek (7st 13Vslb) on points. The paic were evenly matched and had some willing exchanges. Bantamweight. 11. C. Parker (Sit 61b) defeated W. I'oung (Bst 5%1b) on points. The winnor displayed clever footwork, frequently causing his opponent to miss badly. R, Crawford (Sst 3 J/41b) defeated F. Marsh (Bst l%lb) on points. Marsh made a courageous showing, but found tho other's height and reach, combined with superior skill, too much for him. Featherweight. I. Watson (S=t Slilb) defeated J. E, Winter (Sht 101b), on points. Watson hit straight and hard, and though Winter stood up well. to a lot of punishment, he was clearly out-pointed. N. Tanner (Sst 12Ibl defeated G. Cqoke (Bst 101b), on point*. Tanner hit Straight and more cleanly, Cooke being inclined to swing his punches too much. B. Cording (Ost) defeated H. J. Burbidgo (Sst 9%1b), on points. Burbidg* was repeatedly forced back by the weight of the other boy's attack, often being sent to the .canvas. Ho boxed oh gamely, however, and Cording did not have a pi-cat deal to spare at the finish. I. Watson (Sst 8%lb) defeated 1. Hanson (Sst T'/ilb), on points. Though it was Ills second bout for the evening Watsou finished more strongly than the other boy and innnncrod to convert what was hfcinning to look like defeat into a good win. Lightweight. p. Glun^n-y (o ß t SVilb) defeated G. Parsons (Ost 7%1b), on points. Parson* was out-boxed all the way and resorted to holding in an effort to check tho blows that were rained upon him. K.
