FARMER KILLED
OVERTAKEN ON BRIDGE
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMEKSTON- N.,- August 5. Overtaken by a train on the Tokoiiiiiru bridge, eleven.miles south of Palmer.ston North, n ■ farmer, of Tokoniuru,1 Mr. John Henry Liggins, aged 5t3, was killed this morning. Mr. Liggins was'crossing the. bridge on the'trucks at about J) o'clock when he wns struck by a train bound from P;ilmcrston North to Wellington. His body was found in the bed of the stream some hours later. Apparently ho'hud been killed outright. As far as the police were able to ascertain tonight the cugino crew Were unaware of the accident. Mr. Liggins, who had lived in the Tokomaru district all his life, was a veteran of tho Boer War and of the Great War. ■ He . leaves a widow and two children. It seems that Mr. Liggins realised too late that the train was almost upon him, and the footmarks suggest that he climbed the glraers at the side of the bridge but was wearing gumboots and the vibration caused him to slip against the j train, being caught and tossed into the bed of the stream 15ft below, where his body was found by his son. The bridge has an uphill approach each end, and the deceased's efforts to escape at the side probably accounted for his not being seen by tho engine crew.
