ODDFELLOWS
CONFERENCE IN LONDON
VALUABLE DISCUSSIONS
One of the five-New Zealand delegates to the first international, conference of the Manchester Unity, Independent Order of Oddfellows, held at London recently, was Mr. A. B. Edmonds, of Invert-argil], who returned today by the Maunganui from Sydney. Tho other delegates were Messrs. A. G. Shrimpton and A. C. Blair, of Wellington, John McLcoa, of Auckland, and A. Sligo, of Duriedin. ; ' . .
In an interview with..a "Post", reporter Mr. Edmonds said that there were twenty-seven overseas'. delegates at the conference, including seven, from Australia. The main purpose of the gathering' wati to - evolve a uniformritual, degrees, and general working and excellent results had been achieved. The personal contact established with overseas brethren had been very valu: able, and the discussions had led to wider views on matters in which, the delegates had a common' interest; .It had been suggested that beneficial results would be obtained by having similar conferences, say, every five years, and the delegates generally; expressed the hope that an arrangement to that end might be come to shortly.. ■' .
Mr. Edmonds criticised the practice of blending New Zealand butter with, that from other countries for sale on the Homo market, and said that New Zealand's good name was too; valuable to take any risk of losing the demand by that means. He had noticed during his stay in England that blending was quite common and that an inferior butter was produced..'' In the interests of the producers every effort should be made to see that the Dominion's butter was not interfered with., in -''any/ way before it readied the" consumers.' He added that investigations were in progress in the Old Country in connection with the use of a dark-coloured wrapper for butter, the' object being to overcome the deleterious effect of light when butter -was displayed in shop windows
Mr. Shriinptan . left ■. London last Thursday on the' return trip to New Zealand. : ■ ■'■■..■ . - >
