CANTERBURY V. WELLINGTON

The annual match between Canterbury and Wellington B teams was played at the Winter Show Building on Saturday, Wellington defeating the visitors by 14 goals to 11.

The general play was even, and provided an exhibition of short versus long pass'ing. Canterbury's hard and long passes occasionally weiit through AVellingtou's guard, but the visitors'were not as successful ill attack as the short, speedy pass used by the local team. Wellington's defence kept Canterbury forwards well in check, and of a good trio F. Connor was outstanding, her brilliant interceptions spoiling Canterbury's attack repeatedly. L. Smith was the best of the local centres, coming out well for the pass from defence; ;all three forwards combined well. Por Canterbury, M. O'Callaghan was strong in defence, with M. Price an elusive centre, arid P. Philpott the steadiest of the forward third. The teams were as follows:—Canterbury^ Forwards, J. Twose, P. Philpott, G. Kinley; centres, M. Price (captain), 6. Mullins. A. Menzies; defence, M. Fancey, G. Kinley, M. O'Callaghan; emergency, J. McMillan. Wellington: Forwards,' J.--William's, J.'Simmons,\J.'Chappell, V. Palmer; centres, L. Smith, G. Lister, R. Hunter, J. Roberts; defence, P. Connor, R. Sturrock (captain), D. Urwin, K. Flan. Mrs. Granger refereed. TARANAKI v. WELLINGTON THIRDS. . The first match for tlie Gweneth Muir Cup resulted in a draw, 17-all. Both teams played spiritedly, and speedy passing kept the large crowd of spectators excited throughout the game. At the commencement, Taranaki scored quickly, and followed up almost immediately, the score, about five minutes after the commencement, being Taranaki 6, Wellington 1. Determined play brought Wellington's score up to 4 before Taranaki scored again, and from then op until the finish the score see-sawed with Taranaki always ahead, and Wellington fighting gamely. The local torwards were just failing to shoot accurately. With the. teams playing a speedy passing game and the narrow margin of 1 goal in-favour of Taranaki, the last few minutes proved most exciting, and Wellington's successful effort just before time ended one of the best • Taranaki-Welling-ton fixtures played. For the visitors, M. Matangi, defence, and R. Skipper, centre, were outstanding. Miss M. Beales refereed. . '
