TRUNK MURDERS

TWO SEPARATE CRIMES

HUNT FOR TONY MANCINI

:SEA-FRONT ROMEO"

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received. July 17, 2 p.m.) . LONDON, July IG. Scotland Yard has deliberately labelled the. trunk mysteries as "Trunk Crimo No. l"/and "Trunk Crime No. 2, "in order to separate them in the public mind.

The authorities emphasise the necessity for the continuance-of the search for clues to the identity of the torso.) found on Juno 18, which is described as the result of Crime No. 1., -It \vas obviously the, work of' a murderer who employed fiendish cleverness to prevent discovery. Even the manner of death is -unknown, and a month's intensive work has not'produced a single fact to disclose the identity of the victim. The police believe that Miss Kaye, the second victim, was murdered in the basement of a flat in Park Crescent, Brighton^ where sho lived in the latter half of May. This would bo a week before Crime. No. 1 was committed. Tho police theory is that Kaye's body was immediately packed in a trunk and carried by. two men half a mile to Kemp Street. The police have already. obtained a statement from a man ;who assisted to carry tho trunk. "MAN WITH SCARRED UPPER LIP." . , Hundreds of police are searching tlie countryside for Tony Mancini, the "man with the scarred upper lip" and many aliases. Scotland Yard has also sought the assistance- of tlie Continental police, who arq watching ports. •

Miss Kaye was among the list 'of a hundred missing women the police published in connection with '' Crime No. i.". .-":■•■•■ • .

•It is stated, that the police interviewed .Mancini ; the Saturday- before tho v discovery of the Tjody. .

Mancini repeatedly trembled like a leaf whon'questioned by the police. Ho revealed' that <he knew nothing material '/regarding Miss1 Kayo beyond her age, which ruled her out of possible identity, as the unknown woman found' on 'June S was aged from 21 to 25. The police consequently allowed Mancini to go. It is understood that he got a lift in a motor-lorry as far as Crpydon. lie has since been 'izntraced.

It is reported that Mancini Was known as the "Sea Front Borneo." lie proposed marriage to six girls in the last' six' weeks, and v became engaged to three, one of whom says she'sat on tho trunk' containing Kayo's body while visiting Mancini. It is also reported that ho sold clothing belonging to Miss Kayo to the others.

Miss Kayo was the eldest of sixteen children, and left home when she was fouTtecu. She had a chequered career as a dancer, and reputedly earned £20 a week in her best days.

Tho "Daily Express" says that an Amusement Park employee- told the polico that he stayed a flight in Mancini's room, and sat on'thd trunk. He remarked oh the odour. Mancini did not reply.' The friend could not tolerate more than one night there. The "Daily Telegraph" says that a third woman/.Ethel Arnold, was found ill in the street in Brighton and died in hospital, allegedly from the effects of poisoning^ but this is not confirmed at present. / She went to Brighton to identify Kaye's body.
