LEAGUE OP MOTHERS
LOWER HUTT BRANCH
. A bright and varied • programme, artistic decorations, and sunshino wero factors that contributed to a successful afternoon for the July meeting of the Lower Hutt branch of the League of Mothers.
Mrs. Lowe presided, and welcomed visitors and members of other branches and institutes. Eeforenee was mado to the late Mrs. .C. Dowland, always a loyal and valued member, and to the late Mrs. Carman, who also was interested in league work. Those present stood as.a tribute to their memory. • Tho whole programme, after tho serving of afternoon tea, was in the capable hands of members of Stokes Valley Institute. Practical demonstrations, musical items, part singing, and a one-act play made a delightful'"potpourri." Miss Young demonstrated a method of covering a parasol, thereby changing an old rain umbrella into a thing of beauty and usefulness for sunny days. Miss Jacksoa contributed a piano solo, and Mrs. Eait and Mrs. Fenton sang. Mrs. Williamson showed how a small heap of pino-needles, sorno raffia, and pieces of two-ply could be manipulated by clever fingers into artistic sandwich trays, baskets, and other useful articles. The Stokes Valley Songsters gave a dainty part-song, "Water Lilies," and tho finale was an entertaining one-act play, "Go to Jericho," with'an amusing and unexpected denouement. The parts were exceedingly well acted by Mesdames Fenton, Combs, Payne, Eait, and Miss Young—the performance reflecting great credit on the producer, Mrs. Cording.
A large box of home-made sweets was presented to the visiting team, after which a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to tho performers.' The singing of the league hymn and of tho National Anthem, terminated the meeting-
