FINES FOR BOOKMAKING

MAGISTRATE'S DETERRENT

Iv fining two men today for bookmaking, Mr. Wyvern- Wilson, S.M., ordered that the' fines be paid by instal-
"It has been my experience," he remarked, when sentencing Charles Henry Wrathall, aged 47, a caretaker, "that quite a number of persons found in gaming establishments at the time of police raids arc relief workers. Any person who preys upon relief workers is not deserving of sympathy from the community. I. am not going to send this man to prison. He will.bo fined £50, and the fine is to be paid at the rate of 10s a week. By spreading it over a long period it will act as a restraining . influence."
The Magistrate also ordered Leslie X'rancis Saussey, aged 25, to pay £25 at the rate of £1 weekly.
