HUNTING JAY EXPENSIVE
Favourite backers • had a severe. reverse when .the .warm-order selection Hunting Jay, a. "younger brother,to Jayson, whipped round at -the' start'of the,-Crof tori Hack Handicap,'and took no part-in the contest. This unfortunate incident also, caused interference to Dick Whittington, Purse, and Jacana, who had drawn" the three marbles on, his. inside, and nope.of-, them, was ever seriously in the race. •.,' : "
~ The winner turned' iip in Square Acre; ■■who Kails from ■ the5 saine '' establishment as 'Riotous' and Gallamart.. Square Acre was always in the;leading division, out on the track, and he; was probably ,in the van through;, all the concluding Stages, as when a line 'could,be obtained on them he wag well clear. Maine* came through the field in challenge' over the last two furlongs, but Square Acre: was not troubled to run home* a three-length ivinner, one of. the easiest* victories-. at the<: meeting* in flat events.
Square Acre is a three-yeai'-old brown gelding by Acre from a mare by Spalpeen from Repetition, a daughter of Lord of the Isles, who was a. Jiony '-winner- in the north, in. the early years, of the century.
He is, owned by Mr.-A. Couborough, of Auckland, who raced Prince Lv, and hewas joined up with L. Knapp'a team only a fortnight or so prior to his winning a maiden' event at the Dannevirke Emit Meeting recently. He gave his first glimpse of possibilities by leading a field a long way in a race at To Awamutu last month, and he also showed out prominently for much of the trip in the Trial Plate at Treutham last Thursday. Maine, a three-year-old sister to the recently defunct Normandy and halt-sis-ter to Shirley and Anomaly, rau her best race for some time, finishing resolutely from the middle o£ the field. She. is owned and .trained by J. M. Cameron. Gladium, two. lengths back third, had the run of.the. race, but, as on Thursday, he weakened badly a furlong out: h. G-. Morris sent him into a beautiful opening on the fence, but, he could not take advantage of his opportunity. Brown Pearl, prominent out on the track all the way, was right up fourth, just beating the early leader Horowhenua out of' the barren honour. Then after a gap were 1 1'iamingo, Araios (who was in front with Horowhenua. to the. straight), and Kin" Ihomond.
After the race the judicial committee inquired into the cause of Hunting JaYs' being left. Evidence was taken from the starter (Mr W. Price) and Hunting Jay's rider (B. H. Morris), and this satisfied the committee, that the occurrence was purely accidental.
