CHESS
BLEDISLOE CUP MATCH
Twenty a side' telegraphic chess matches to decide the club championship o£ New Zealand were scheduled to begin on Saturday evening, the pairings being Auckland CO. v. Wellington C.C., and Canterbury CO. v. Otago C.C. The Aucklaud and Wellington .teams attended punctually and the team lists were exchanged promptly at'G.3o p.m. Before any moves could .bq sent, however, the wire broke down. Two hours later, it : was discovered that the fault was in Auckland and that each .move would have to be morsed between the Auckland Telegraph Office and the Auckland Chess Room. This wotild have entailed much loss o£ valuable time, and the chances were strongly' in favour■of none of the 20 games being finished at the end ot the second night's play. It was agreed, on a recommendatipn from Auckland, that a .fresh start should be mads at 6.30 p.m on Saturday next, the match to conclude on July 28. When the first Auckland v. Wellington match was played in 1891 it occupied three. Saturday evenings. Three evenings were also devoted to the second match (1895). and to the fourth in' 1902. Play in the fifth match. (1904) was spread over four .evenings, yet no less .tliaii'six imnuisued games had to be.adjudicated on. llie experience of the past clearly shows how. useless it would have been to have made a belated start on Saturday evening. Lhe Auckland side, which contains a lady player, is as follows :-r-Messrs. D. I. Jones, A. Pickett, H. D. Adais, J. Buchan, b. King, G.. Sale/C. P. Bolton, F. R. Jeffreys, .Rev. H. B. Wingfield, R. X Baeyertz, C. G. Lennard, H. Lees, L. E. Andrews, C..A. Langabeer, H. S. Symons, :±>.v Gough, H. Oakley-Browne (president and .captain),; A/'B..DalloTC,>Mrs.!.Short, ;and: 8.-Newick;'- As this- team,: includes no less thati'five Sew Zealand:-Congress players, it will be apparent that the Auckland Club has a formidable side for its jubilee year. Mr. Oakley-Browne won the toss from Mr. Gyles, and the Aucklanders will thus have first move at-the odd-num-bered boards. The Wellington Club is without the services of Mr. J. C; McCrea, who is on a visit to Australia? and of- Messrs. Fouhy and R.C. Sim, 7'who are on the; sick list. It is therefore ; not ■ .'at'■•"full strength, but it-is hoped that'the 'old-'tra-. dition of a close finish/will be'in evidence once niore when tho results are available.Aews regarding- Saturday eveuing's play m the match between the Otago and Canterbury Clubs is being awaited with interest by North Island enthusiasts. ;
