GAOL FOR THEFTS
A sentence of one month's imprisonment on each of three charges of theft was imposed by Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today on Percy Powell Romoril, aged 26, a>. mechanic. The sentences are to Be concurrent;
Romeril pleaded guilty to stealing sums of money totalling £.6 Is 7d, the property of C. and A. Odlin, Ltd., at Wellington; to stealing at Dunedin a gold bangle, valued at £5, the property of Aston S. Page; and, to stealing at Dunedin a battery, valued at £1 10^, the property of J. MeL. Brown.
Detective-Sergeant L. Revell said that Romeril had stolen the money from Odlins, his employers, by failing to account for it. The theft of the bangle was "particularly mean," as the article belonged to a lady with whose family he was friendly. ' The battery he had taken from a motor-cycle he was using,, and he had substituted an inferior one for it. ;
In asking for probation Mr. G. C. Kent said that the accused was a first offender and that the amounts involved were small. He had found difficulty in obtaining employment, was in low water financially, and was driven to these desperate means of obtaining ready cash.
"I hardly think he is a case for probation," said the Probation Officer (Mr. T. P. Mills).
