"VERY BAD TASTE"

CRITICISM RESENTED

Strong exception was taken at the Hutt River Board yesterday by Mr. J. Brasell to the criticism made at the last meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council by Councillors J. E. Napier and C. J. Ashton on the policy of the; board when they made assertions that the lower reaches of the river were.in a dangerous condition. Councillor Brasell also expressed surprise that the Mayor had "allowed the discussion.

When, said Mr. Brasell, the board had desired a loan to make the lower reaches safe, it had received its strongest opposition from the Moera district, where .. Councillor Napier lived. Since then the board had raised the stopbanks in the neighbourhood of Moera by l£t 6in to 2ft. In regard to the statement that the channel was filling up, the report of the board's engineer prepared before the criticism definitely stated thatthe channel was never lower than it was at present. The engineer had been born in the district and knew the river "from A to' Z:", He was recognised as one of the best river engineers. in New Zealand, and the board had every confidence in him.

Mr. J. Mitchell, deputy-chairman of the board: It was very bad taste of the two councillors to criticise another local body. I. tried myself to stop- it. I will leave it at that.

■Mr. M. J. Hodgins was yesterday appointed to represent the Hutt River Board on. the committee set up by the -Wellington Chamber'of Commerce to consider the. question, of a suitable site for' an'aerodrome for Wellington...'.
