SOCIAL PROGRESS

MEETING AT KELBURN

A vciy successful meeting was held by the, Kclburu,' Branch o£ the Women's Social Progress Movement in the Presbyterian Schoolroom yesterday afternoon. The proeident (Miss Crump) presided over a large attendance of members.

The room was bright with large bowls 01 chrysanthemums and autumn leaves.

Mrs. Wilfred Andrews sang several charming songs and. appreciated reei-tatio-ns were given by Miss Jean Dullard.

The Bey. 11. "W. Newell, M.A., gave an inte-iesting address, his -subject being "Organised Christianity for the New World." Mr. Newell stated, that the Church of today has to face the fact that the old respect for,the Sabbath is dwindling. Wireless, too, is an important factor in decreasing' church atteßdanccs. Many churches in these days are finding it increasingly difficult to balance their ,budgets, and lastly the fact that the community itself is taking aver a great- share of the work formerly 'undertaken by the, CTiurch undembtedjy detracts from its social life. Where formerly the. Church, was tho social centre, there now exist societies and. clubs, etc., which have a far greater interest for this generation.

Nevertheless, stated the speaker, even if the surgery of modern times did' cut off these externals of the .Churchj' no harm could come if tho. true purpose of the Church should be more; clearly revealed.' The.'three chief aims cf the modern Church should be the cultivation -of a true spirit of worshipand prayer, spiritual education' for young and .old, and a live missionary purpose—a world unified! with God as ics. centre..

Mrs. Pearson proposed a vote of. thanks to Mr. Newell for his address^ which was cordially endorsed, and then tho committee, consisting of MesdameH Dallard r Pearson, Purdie, MePhee, Rob'ertson, Freeman, and Jladford served a delicious afternoon tea.
