HOUSING IN BRITAIN
BUILDING SINCE WAR
LONDON'S NEW SUBURBAN
HOMES
(Brltlsb Official Wireless.)
RUGBY, April 7.
In the past fifteen years no fewer than 2,170,000 new houses have been erected in England and of this number nearly 1,900,000 were built in the last ten years, fa'O per cent, of them by private enterprise;
Although the population of Britain liiis increased by only 2,000,000 since tho war, the new- housing accommodation provided is sufficient for three times that number. Greatest activity has taken place in the suburbs of London, where nearly 500,000' new homes have been built in a decade.
This development is reflected in the official returns of building societies, which show that since 1922 the amount advanced on mortgages has substantially increased each" year. In the last seven years the annual total has nearly doubled and it is predicted that the 1933 figure will reach. £100,000,000, nearly £10,000,000 above the record total of 1931. ■■■',<■
