EASTER SHOW

CONCLUDING SESSION

SUCCESSFUL EVENING

A Her a fortnight's sensem, tho 1034 j Easter fellow and Industrial Exhibition of the Wellington Show Association and "Wellington Manufacturers' Association was brought to a successful conclusion on Saturday night. The fact that the annual show is filling a public -want was-evidenced by the public patronage at all sessions since it started. This year tho exhibition was more elaborate and interesting than ever, and this was reflected in public opinion. From an early hour on Saturday evening the swing doors at the entrance moved ceaselessly, and it was not long before the big building was thronged with thousands of people, many of whom remained until a late hour. The sideshows did a roaring trade, judging by the number of people who were ciutching boxes of chocolates and other trophies won at the stalls.

TJio principal attraction on the jjrogrammc was the final the inter-house girls' marching competition, and long before the start the stadium was packed to the doors. Nineteen teams, each of eight girls and a leader, competed, and for nearly two hours the spectators were provided with an entertaining and colourful display. The girls were dressed by the firms they represented, points being given for originality of dress, neatness, and appearance,'marching, deportment, execution of movements, and -for thel-cap-tain's bearing, correctness, and commands. The evolutions were commencing from dressing a squad, quick march, marching in line, right turn on the inarch, right wheel, forming squad, niaVk time, right about wheel, and finally the correct halt. The public very quickly learnt to appreciate the value of the different movements by the different teams as shown'"by. their very loud and spontaneous applause when any of tlieso movements were particularly well executed. The costuming was most, original, and as the girls stepped out to the strains of a popular march played by members of the .Port Nicholson Silver Band, a stirring and- spectacular scene was presented. The performance culminated in a combined display in. which all the competitors performed a counter-march and two maze marches, the many coloured costumes weaving a pattern on the floor of tho stadium. An amusing interlude' was provided by a team of men from tho Port Nicholson Band, who paraded, in variegated ladies' costumes. » Tho winning team was the one scoring the highest aggregate of points over five performances. Tho .judges' decision was as follows:—Bryant and May (A team), 1; Mary Garden, 2; O. Stone, 3. At the conclusion of the competition, Mr. J. Abel, on. behalx of the InterHouse Girls' Association, thanked the firms that had contributed towards the display, which, he said, was exceptionally good from a military and marching point of view.
