ANNUAL MEETING

PLANS FOR 1934

Tho annual meeting of the W.E.A. District Council was held this week, Mr. A. T. Macalpiii presiding: The annual report and balance-sheet ,were presented, and satisfaction was expressed at the good work! done during the year in spite of financial difficulties.. The chairman regretted that there was a serious debit balance, but stated that tho grant which the College Council had received'from the Carnegie Trust' in America would enable the tutorial class committee to offer'a limited programme both in city and in-provincial centres, although tho service's of the tutororganiser had been dispensed, with. The broadcast talks were being continued on Thursday arid Saturday evenings, and "box scheme" courses in music, art, literature, and drama, and a dis-cussion-correspondence course on social and economic questions would be available for students in. the rural areas.

The Wellington session will.open on Monday; April 9,: when Prof essor B. E. Murphy will commence a course of twenty lectures on general economics. Dr.: Cyprus Mitchell will' give 'a similar course on Wednesday evenings, dealing with tho principles and problems of democracy, and Mrs. Craig Mackenzie, M.A,, will offer.. a. further 'course of twelve lectures on literature and the drama <m Friday- evenings. In the second half of the session a psychology course will be conducted by Professor T. A. Hunter." Two courses have been planned for Lower Hutt—one of eight lectures by Dr. J. C. Beaglehole on an "Introduction to Political Thinking," and a half course of twelve lectures on the drama by; Mrs, Craig Mackenzie M.A. These will be given in the Council Chamber on Tuesday evenings.,' A small subscription will be charged' for each of the classes, but the lectures are free to unemployed men and women. During the session three short courses will be given in v the. city, on Tuesday evenings by Professor G. W.von- Zedlitz, Dr. I. L. G. Sutherland, and Miss Valeric Corliss. Miss Corlisses lecture-recitals will bo given during September^ and the subjects dealt with will include "National Characteristics * iii Music," and"■■, tho • "Historical, '■' Psychological, Creative, Interpretative, and -InStru,imental Aspects in Music." :; These: lecture-recitals will be', attractively illustrated. The extensive library is greatly appreciated by both town and "country students, and a number of new books will bo added, to the various sections through the Carnegio Grant.

Tho retiring officers were re-elected' unopposed, and the personnel is as' follows:—President, Mr. A. T. Macalpin; vice-president, Mr. F. D: Cornwell; secretary-treasurer, ' Mrs. E. Maslen; executive committee, Mesdames E. Coventry and E. Maslen, Messrs. A.. T. Macalpin, F. D. Cornwell, and JR. D. Scott, and Dr. A. G. Butchers. Votes, of thanks were accorded to ,tho re-1 •tiring officers, the lion, auditor, Mi%' James Mclntosh, and the. Press.. A resolution of sympathy was passed on tho recent death of Professor D. M. V.. Somnierville, who was chairman of the tutorial class committee for several years, and congratulations ivere offered to Mr. F. F. Miles on the distinction awarded to him by the French Government.
