DUTY TO EMPIRE

EASTER SHOW REFLECTION

Commenting upon the fine display at the British court at the Easter' Show, "Britisher" writes to "The Post" as follows:—

"Like other people, I hoped that the last war had so drenched the world in sorrow and misery that mankind' would be drawn together in one brotherhood, and that wo had seen the last of butchery. On the contrary, the national patriotic spirit is being intensified the world over. Nations are drawing behind national barriers and adversity is driving nations to an economic war more bitter and more selfish than the world has ever yet seen, besides which new forces are stirring up in the East which are menacing the standards of life and living of all Western nations. "When travelling one realises more fully that the security and. prosperity of our country depend solely on the strength of the Empire we belong to,' and every pound spent in countries with a lower standard of living is like providing a shell to batter down our own living standards. Whether there is a quota or not, Great Britain remains our market, Other nations buying from us only that which they cannot produce themselves or buy elsewhere. The economic war which is now raging may be far more potent and far-reaching than the war in the field, and if ever we had a duty^ to ourselves and our Empire it is today.

[.""This 'thought was behind the instigation of the British Court at the | Easter Show.1 It may be a small effort, but if will remind thousands of people of their duty to Great Britain, and that the British standard of "materials is: unequalled anywhere else in 'the world. '~\' Let us always' keep in mind tho fact that when trouble comes with the eastern, nation; with which many of our people are dealing today they.will call upon Great Britain., to protect them. I know the effort has inspired people to buy British goods in preference to foreign, and one feels that tho effort has been well worth while." . ■
