SELF-TORTURE IN SOUTH

FATAL RIOTING FOLLOWS

• CALCUTTA, March.27. | Prior to the fierce religious rioting at' Veersinganpet, in South India, last I night which resulted in the death of an Indian Magistrate and serious injuries to an Indian police inspector, Hindus among- the crowd of 5000 made incisions in their arms, legs, an<3 thighs into which they thrust hooks attached to ropes and dragged effigies of Mariammon, the Hindu Goddess of smallpox. The police vainly endeavoured to prevent this self-torture, but wero fiercely stoned. A police officer fired a revolv-er at the crowd, killing two and injuring many. The mob later fatally stabbed the Magr istrate and inflicted scores of wounds on the police inspector, finally stabbing him in the eyes. Ten constables are in hospital in. a grave condition, and one died during the morning.
