HAWKE'S BAY MEETING
WIN-AND-PLACE MACHINES
Useful fields are carded for the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's First Autumn Meeting on Saturday, and the racing should be keenly contested. The horses racing here will lor the most part go on to Waipuknrau on 'Monday, and they will return for the second fixture at Hastings on Saturday week. This club is retaining the win-and-place system of betting. Among interesting runners at the meeting will be last season's steeplechase find Lima Lux, who won a hurdle event at Woodvillo in ISlay first time out.for the winter. He is reported to' have been working well lately, and he is cmite- capable of repeating.the performance. The principal event is the Hawke's Bay Cup, which is no longer the important race it was in former days. This year's field, is of only moderate quality,-and as Slippery has. not yet proved himself a middle-distance, horse the public may preier to rely on the consistent hack Blue Boy, who at least, can stay well. Gainsfid is also in good form, and High Grader, steadily improving, may be just the sort to eouid.to light in a race such as this. The Havelock Flying' Handicap has attracted quite a fair lot of useful sprinters, and if Slippery Were reserved lie would
about win. Cullus's,- Awapuni form draws attention to ,his prospects,. and Hunting Day aud Stitch are ■ another pair in good form..
